Jorge Mas Canosa Middle School

Summary:

Jorge Mas Canosa Middle School is a public middle school in Miami, Florida, serving 1,344 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the Miami-Dade school district, which is ranked 24th out of 68 districts in Florida and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite serving a predominantly Hispanic student population (around 90%) and a high percentage of economically disadvantaged students (64-79% receive free or reduced-price lunch), Jorge Mas Canosa Middle School consistently outperforms the Miami-Dade and Florida state averages in standardized tests, including a 91% proficiency rate in Algebra 1 EOC, compared to 61% for Miami-Dade and 55% for Florida. This suggests the school is effectively supporting its students and providing a high-quality education. In contrast, nearby schools like Redland Middle School and Richmond Heights Middle School have more diverse racial compositions and lower free/reduced-price lunch rates.

However, Jorge Mas Canosa Middle School has experienced a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 13.5% in 2019-2020 to 28.6% in 2022-2023, which is notably higher than the nearby schools. This concerning trend warrants further investigation and targeted interventions to address the underlying causes and improve student attendance. Overall, Jorge Mas Canosa Middle School stands out as a high-performing institution, particularly in academic achievement, despite the challenges it faces in serving a predominantly economically disadvantaged student population.

Open Quote My daughter is part of the Cambridge Studies program and I am very impressed by their parent participation as well as the teacher teaching styles - very interactive. The school has a focus on academics where there is a lot in place to support that success but they also invest a lot of energy in creating fun incentives for the kids such as exciting field trips outside of the state. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
