Patterson Elementary School

Summary:

Patterson Elementary School is a public elementary school in Washington, DC, serving 273 students in grades PK-5. The school has a predominantly African American student body, with over 98% of students identifying as such in recent years.

Despite increased per-student spending, Patterson Elementary consistently underperforms compared to the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) district and state averages in both English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics proficiency. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 48.1% of 3rd graders, 15.4% of 4th graders, and 6.9% of 5th graders were proficient or better in ELA, compared to DCPS averages of 35%, 40.6%, and 38.3%, respectively. The school's mathematics proficiency rates are also significantly lower than the district and state averages across all grade levels. Patterson Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom half of DC elementary schools, with a ranking as low as 113 out of 120 schools in the 2017-2018 school year.

When compared to nearby schools, such as Center City PCS - Congress Heights, King Elementary School, and Leckie Education Campus, Patterson Elementary's academic performance is significantly lower. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the 3rd grade ELA proficiency rate at Patterson Elementary (48.1%) was much lower than the rates at these nearby schools, which ranged from 17.5% to 45.5%. The school's predominantly African American student population and the increase in per-student spending suggest that more targeted interventions and support may be needed to improve educational outcomes for the students at Patterson Elementary.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
