Scofield Middle School

Summary:

Scofield Middle School is a public middle school in Stamford, Connecticut, serving 584 students in grades 6-8. Despite being part of the Stamford School District, which is ranked 132 out of 158 districts in the state, Scofield consistently outperforms the district and the state of Connecticut in standardized test scores across all grade levels and subjects.

Scofield's academic performance is particularly impressive, with proficiency rates in SBAC/English Language Arts ranging from 46.3% to 53.9% for 6th-8th graders, compared to the district's 35.5% to 37.3%. In SBAC/Mathematics, Scofield's proficiency rates were 32.7% to 42.6%, significantly higher than the district's 25.6% to 27.6%. The school's 8th-grade proficiency rate in NGSS/Science was 58.4%, much higher than the district's 38.6% and the state's 48.1%. Scofield's diverse student population, with a higher percentage of Hispanic (41.95%) and Asian (9.25%) students, also contributes to its strong academic performance, particularly among its Hispanic and special education students.

While Scofield Middle School outperforms the other Stamford middle schools, such as Cloonan, Rippowam, Dolan, and Turn of River, it still lags behind the top-performing schools in the surrounding areas, such as Central Middle School in Greenwich and Middlesex Middle School in Darien. Scofield's focus on supporting economically disadvantaged students and maintaining a low student-teacher ratio appear to be contributing factors to its success, but the school still has room for improvement to reach the level of these high-performing schools.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Horrible school mishandles bullying and blames it on the victim and lets the bully get away! Bully stole my pencil case I told the teacher she did nothing! Tried grabbing it back and then the teacher grabbed me and kicked me out of the class instead of the bully! She lied about saying i pushed her when in reality she pushed me! Our homeroom always went last at lunch and they never rotate! If you mistype your lunch number instantly back of the line! Couldn't get your parents to sign a paper? Publicly shamed! Forgot an assignment instant lunch detention! 3 floors of stairs and my food almost fell! No one cared! TVs in lunchroom but never used! Kid punched me in open house and the principal did nothing! They left us alone in a little room and kids bullied me and there were witnesses! What a shame! Glad the old principal is gone but nothing much has changed. Teachers are NOT friendly. They wanted to call the cops on me for something I did not do! Staff get away with child abuse and lies! Expect to be emotionally and physically abused! The tech class I signed up for doesn't teach you anything! No learning computer programming at all just playing a 2d game! Might as well call it arcade club! I thought this school was good, oh I was so wrong thinking that! Also the staff at Scofield go to your elementary school and get information about you and use it against you! They only focus on negative things on you not positive! Do not expect a clean slate or anything good about you being noticed! Teachers don't care about the students, and bullying is a huge problem! No emotional support at all! They defend bullies, and punish victims! Also the teachers are so strict and they make the lessons very boring. I have been to other schools where the teachers really care about engaging the students and making the lesson fun and educational! When parents are invited to the school they separate you from your parents so you cannot talk negatively about school, and so they can lie to your parents! This school is like a prison and no one listens to the students, only the bullies and there is no psychologist to interview you and find out what really happened! Also this school is very far for most kids so you have to get up extra earlier and you will arrive home later than a regular local school! The bus stops are really far from most kids homes, so your parents have to drive you to the bus stop or you have to walk a mile or more! Please do not send your kids to this school trust me! About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
