Dwight-Bellizzi Dual Language Academy

Summary:

Dwight-Bellizzi Dual Language Academy is an elementary school serving grades PK-8 in the Hartford School District in Connecticut. The school has a student population of 626 and is located in a predominantly Hispanic and low-income area of Hartford. Despite its dual language focus, Dwight-Bellizzi has consistently ranked among the lowest-performing elementary schools in the state, with a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger for the past several years.

Dwight-Bellizzi's student population is significantly more Hispanic (around 80%) compared to nearby schools, which have more diverse student populations. The school's academic performance, as measured by standardized test scores, is also significantly lower than the state and district averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2023-2024, only 10.3% of 4th graders were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 49.4% statewide. Additionally, Dwight-Bellizzi has an extremely high rate of free and reduced-price lunch recipients, ranging from 80-88% over the past few years, indicating a high concentration of students from low-income families.

While Dwight-Bellizzi spends more per student ($16,977 in 2018-2019) compared to the state average, this has not translated into improved academic outcomes. The nearby schools, such as Breakthrough Magnet School South, Kennelly School, and M.D. Fox School, while also serving predominantly minority and low-income student populations, generally outperform Dwight-Bellizzi academically. This suggests that factors beyond just student demographics and poverty levels may be contributing to the school's persistent underperformance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Terrible school. This is supposed to be a school that teaches Asian culture and Chinese language, yet even the advanced students can barely say "hello" and count to 10 in Chinese. That's it! The students are out of control. The administrators are incompetent, especially the principal, who seems to be a bit shady. Don't torture your children by sending them here. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
