Hamilton Avenue School

Summary:

Hamilton Avenue School is an elementary school in Greenwich, Connecticut, serving 294 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Greenwich School District, which is ranked 32 out of 158 districts in the state and has a 4-star rating.

One of the key features of Hamilton Avenue School is its diverse student population, with 50.34% Hispanic, 32.65% White, 5.44% African American, and 4.76% Asian students. This diversity is much higher than the nearby schools, which tend to have a majority White student population. However, the school's academic performance, as measured by standardized test scores, is generally lower than the district and state averages. For example, the school's 5th-grade English Language Arts proficiency rate was 61.9%, compared to the district's 80.8% and the state's 51.4%. Similarly, the school's 5th-grade Mathematics proficiency rate was 47.6%, compared to the district's 73.3% and the state's 43.1%. Additionally, Hamilton Avenue School has a significantly higher percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, at 55.78%, compared to the nearby schools.

Despite the school's lower academic performance, it has a relatively low student-teacher ratio of 6.9 students per teacher, which is lower than the nearby schools. However, the school has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Connecticut elementary schools, with a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger for the past several years. This suggests that the school faces persistent challenges in improving academic outcomes. In comparison, the nearby schools in the Greenwich School District, such as Old Greenwich School, International School at Dundee, and North Mianus School, consistently outperform Hamilton Avenue School on academic measures.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Major improvement since new leadership in 2015, A principal who cares about children, is straight forward, and her main concern is their success!!

They have changed the curriculum and introduced the STEM program which is Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics which is inquiry based and hands on learning. Our children will be learning the whats, whys, and how's of composting, the weather with the new weatherbug station, the children will be tech savvy, they also have musical instruction and learn to play violin, read sheet music, will learn spanish.

My children are taking flight under the wings of the most dedicated educators and paraprofessionals in the state. HAS is going places! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
