DSST: Montview Middle School

Summary:

DSST: Montview Middle School is a public charter school in Denver, Colorado that serves 466 students in grades 6-8. The school stands out for its diverse student population, with a majority of African American and Hispanic students, as well as its high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds.

Academically, DSST: Montview's performance on state tests is generally lower than the district and state averages. Only 34.2% of students were proficient or better in English Language Arts, and 26.3% were proficient in math, compared to 40.7% and 31.2% for the district, respectively. This academic performance has declined over time, with the school's statewide ranking dropping from 41 out of 436 Colorado middle schools in 2014-2015 to 267 out of 485 in 2023-2024. However, the school's student-teacher ratio of 13.7 is lower than nearby schools like McAuliffe International School (19.0) and Denver Green School Northfield (18.2).

When compared to nearby schools, DSST: Montview stands out for its higher percentage of minority students and lower academic performance. For example, Denver Green School Northfield and McAuliffe International School, which are both within a few miles of DSST: Montview, have significantly higher test scores and a more socioeconomically diverse student population. These differences suggest that DSST: Montview may face unique challenges in providing a high-quality education to its students, and the school may need to explore targeted strategies to address these challenges.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school seems like they are all about the core values, but need to practice what they preach. The problem student/students are not given any real Consequences, and the way they handled a situation makes the bullied student feel even more of a hopeless situation. I do not recommend this school to anyone. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
