Stedman Elementary School

Summary:

Stedman Elementary School is a public elementary school in Denver, Colorado, serving 439 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the School District No. 1, which is ranked 78 out of 116 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Stedman Elementary School stands out for its relatively diverse student population, with 36.22% White, 28.02% African American, and 28.7% Hispanic students. While the school's academic performance has improved over the years, moving from a statewide ranking of 874 out of 914 Colorado elementary schools in 2015-2016 to 382 out of 943 in 2023-2024, it still lags behind nearby high-performing schools like Teller Elementary School and Park Hill School. However, Stedman performs better than some other nearby schools, such as Hallett Academy and University Prep - Steele St., in both academic proficiency and statewide rankings.

Stedman Elementary School's strong performance in certain student subgroups, such as Hispanic and White students, is noteworthy and could provide valuable insights for the school to further improve the performance of other subgroups, such as those from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Additionally, the school's gradual improvement in academic proficiency and its relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 15.1 to 17 over the past three school years, suggest that the school's efforts to enhance student learning are yielding results. Continued focus on supporting all student subgroups and building on the school's strengths could help Stedman Elementary School further enhance its educational outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Stedman is a very strong and nurturing community with talented leadership and an active PTA of involved parents who are working together to create meaningful experiences for the students and providing support and resources to the staff and parents. In the 2019/2020 school year, 3rd-5th graders' math results were very high. 3rd graders, for example, had the second highest scores in the district, just behind Polaris (a gifted and talented magnet school). Their Spanish immersion program is wonderful. We currently have our child in Spanish Kinder and absolutely love it (as does our child).
From experience, I recognize what a stressful experience the Choice process can be. If you can, take a moment and watch this 5-minute video from the non-profit "Park Hill Neighbors for Equity in Education" (PHNEE). It provides a larger picture on the school boundaries and the impact (both positive and negative) the Choice system can have on our schools and communities. https://phnee.org/oneparkhill/.

Here's also a link to learn more about Stedman's Principal, who was just recently featured on the TODAY show, as well as on the school's academic performance ("SPF Results - Showing Growth" from Oct. 22, 2019): http://stedman.dpsk12.org/category/featured/

Good luck in your Choice journey! Close Quote

Open Quote As a parent, we love the amazing community at Stedman. We love having the option of a Traditional track, as well as a Dual Language (Spanish) track. As a small neighborhood school, all the staff and teachers know me and my student. Our child has had a wonderful experience learning and growing at Stedman! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
