High Point Academy

Summary:

High Point Academy is a public charter elementary and middle school serving grades PK-8 in the diverse community of Aurora, Colorado, with a student population that is predominantly African American, Hispanic, and from low-income backgrounds.

Despite serving a challenging student population, High Point Academy consistently underperforms compared to the state and its charter school district on standardized tests, with proficiency rates significantly lower than the state and district averages across all grade levels and subject areas. The school's performance is particularly concerning for African American, Hispanic, and low-income students, who rank in the bottom 5% of Colorado elementary schools. Over the past several years, High Point Academy's statewide ranking has steadily declined, and it now ranks 840th out of 943 Colorado elementary schools with a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Interestingly, the nearby schools serving similar student populations, such as Lena Archuleta Elementary School, generally outperform High Point Academy on academic measures. The high student-teacher ratio at High Point Academy may be a contributing factor to its academic struggles, and the significant performance gaps for certain student subgroups highlight the need for targeted interventions and support to address the unique needs of the school's diverse student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My daughter has been attending HPA since preschool and I have to say is the best choice I made by choosing HPA for my daughter. She is in 5th grade now and she has been a straight A student ever since pre-k. Also, her teachers have been very influential in my daughter's life in making right decisions in her studies. Now I have a 10 month old baby boy and he will be attending HPA as well, as soon as he turns 3 years! Thanks HPA for all your focus on our kids academic goals! Close Quote

Open Quote My daughter has attended HPA since the school opened in 2006. We have loved being apart of the HP community, and are very excited to see where the development of our school will lead our students. I can't imagine sending her anywhere else. This school is worth checking out. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
