Omar D Blair Charter School

Summary:

Omar D Blair Charter School is a public charter elementary school serving grades K-8 in Denver, Colorado, with a diverse student population of around 38% African American, 34% Hispanic, 13% Asian, and 6% two or more races. However, the school consistently underperforms compared to the School District No. 1 and the state on standardized assessments, particularly in English Language Arts and Mathematics.

In the 2023-2024 school year, only 24.6% of Omar D Blair Charter School students were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 40.7% for the district and 44.1% for the state. In Math, the school's proficiency rate was just 12%, while the district and state were at 31.2% and 34.2%, respectively. The school's performance is particularly low for certain student subgroups, such as ranking 11th out of 18 Colorado elementary schools for African American students and 190th out of 242 for Hispanic students in ELA proficiency. Additionally, the school has a high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 71.87% to 76.89% over the past three school years, indicating a high proportion of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds.

When comparing Omar D Blair Charter School to other nearby schools in the same district, such as Barney Ford Elementary, Marie L. Greenwood Academy, and Florida Pitt-Waller Ece-8 School, it becomes clear that the academic performance issues are not unique to this school. Several other elementary schools in the area also struggle with low proficiency rates on state assessments, particularly in Math and ELA. This suggests that the underlying socioeconomic factors may be playing a significant role in the academic challenges faced by these institutions, highlighting the need for targeted interventions and support to address the unique needs of students from low-income backgrounds.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I have worked at three different schools and ODB is BY FAR the best school I have ever worked at. I love everything about it: the leadership, teachers, students, parents. It is an amazing community that develops the whole scholar. The energy at the school is so positive. Close Quote

Open Quote omar d. blair is one of the most amazing school that a kid would want to go to.
parents i would recommend that your children should go to omar d. blair because the teachers there are fantastic at doing their jobs well. I went their last year it was the most spontaneous school i have ever gone to so parents register your kids in omar d. blair because who knows they might be something amazing in the future. to end this paragraph I must also tell parents how fabulous the students are in that school.when I stepped my foot in that school for the first I was so nervous like a big pumpkin that one of the student in the school came up to me and introduced herself to me saying Hi my name is selah gelinas and I responded back saying my name then she told welcome to omar d. blair and I said thanks and we headed of to our class for the rest of the day. so parents register your kids now or it will be to late to register your kids b/c the register sheet is full then so hurry up now. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
