Highline Academy Northeast

Summary:

Highline Academy Northeast is a public charter elementary school serving grades PK-5 in Denver, Colorado, with a diverse student population. However, the school consistently underperforms compared to the district and state averages on academic assessments, particularly for its African American and Hispanic students, as well as students from low-income families.

Highline Academy Northeast's proficiency rates on the CMAS (Colorado Measures of Academic Success) assessments are significantly lower than the School District No. 1 and the state in both English Language Arts (26.4% vs. 40.7% and 44.1%) and Math (12.4% vs. 31.2% and 34.2%). This trend has been consistent over the past few years, and the school's performance is particularly concerning for certain student subgroups. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, Highline Academy Northeast ranked 12th out of 18 Colorado elementary schools for African American students and 188th out of 242 for Hispanic students in English Language Arts proficiency.

Despite having a relatively low student-teacher ratio, Highline Academy Northeast's academic struggles raise questions about the underlying factors contributing to its performance. When compared to nearby schools, such as Lena Archuleta Elementary School, which consistently outperforms Highline Academy Northeast on CMAS assessments, the need for targeted interventions and a comprehensive approach to addressing the school's challenges becomes evident. Identifying and addressing the root causes of Highline Academy Northeast's underperformance, particularly for its disadvantaged student populations, will be crucial in improving student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I have three kids at this school and we all LOVE IT. The last negative post is outdated and skewed. Personally, I loved the music teacher they referred to (because he actually got my kids excited about music!), but I love the new teacher as well. And yes, there was a turnover in leadership several years ago, which takes time to level out. The current principal is solid and clearly dedicated to the community and the kids - you see him everyday at the dropoff/pickup line. The teachers are wonderful and always available - they reach out to parents in a variety of ways and remain consistently responsive to parent requests. The students are widely varied in backgrounds, and the school does an EXCELLENT job of promoting and celebrating this diversity. But the thing I love most of all, my kids loooooove going to this school. They're all building strong friendships and striving for personal growth, while other students, teacher and staff cheer them on daily. I can't imagine going anywhere else. This school is awesome! Open Quote The first couple of years we had at this school were great. Since the original principal left it has gone downhill. I won't let my kids attend music class given the teacher does whatever he wants, lets the kids hear bad music and videos. They don't follow my sons IEP and can't seem to support their teachers enough to keep them from leaving in the middle of the school year. Three 4th grads teachers in one year is sad! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
