Mt. Washington Elementary

Summary:

Mt. Washington Elementary is a public elementary school in Los Angeles, California, serving 431 students in grades K-6 and part of the Los Angeles Unified school district.

Mt. Washington Elementary is a standout performer, consistently ranking among the top 10% of California elementary schools over the past 5 years. The school's students significantly outperform their peers in the district and state on standardized tests, with 73.23% proficient or better in English Language Arts and 72.22% in Mathematics, compared to just 43.06% and 32.83% for Los Angeles Unified, respectively. This strong academic achievement extends across different student subgroups, including female, male, Hispanic, and white students. Despite having a relatively low percentage of students from low-income families, Mt. Washington Elementary maintains its high-quality education, suggesting the school is effectively serving students from diverse backgrounds.

When compared to nearby schools within the same district, Mt. Washington Elementary stands out as a clear leader. For example, Aldama Elementary, the closest school, has significantly lower academic performance across all subject areas and grade levels, with proficiency rates often 20-30 percentage points lower than Mt. Washington. Other nearby schools, such as Arroyo Seco Museum Science and Latona Avenue Elementary, also demonstrate lower academic achievement compared to Mt. Washington. However, the school may want to address its increasing chronic absenteeism and relatively high student-teacher ratio to continue providing the best possible education for its students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The school is great if you are a white family who doesn't ever want to acknowledge race or that racism exists or that bias exists in every person and in the classroom. And if you want to pretend that every time the "n" word is used by a kid it's a completely isolated incident. The PTA pretty much called all the shots and were bullies to parents who had grievances because their kids were being treated differently on the schoolyard or in the classroom. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
