Buchanan Street Elementary

Summary:

Buchanan Street Elementary is a public elementary school in Los Angeles, California, serving 291 students in grades K-5. The school is part of the Los Angeles Unified School District, which is ranked 871 out of 1,568 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Buchanan Street Elementary faces several challenges, including high chronic absenteeism rates, lower-than-average test scores in English Language Arts and Mathematics compared to the district and state, and a high percentage of students from low-income backgrounds. The school's performance is generally lower than nearby schools in the same district, such as Aldama Elementary, Toland Way Elementary, and Yorkdale Elementary, which have higher test scores and lower chronic absenteeism rates. However, Buchanan Street Elementary outperforms some other nearby schools, such as Monte Vista Street Elementary and Annandale Elementary, which have even lower test scores and higher chronic absenteeism rates.

While Buchanan Street Elementary's performance is generally lower than the district and state averages, the school does show some relative strengths in the performance of certain student subgroups. For example, the school's female students and Hispanic students have performed better than their male and overall student counterparts, respectively, in terms of statewide rankings. Additionally, the school's special education students and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds have also performed relatively better compared to their peers at the state level. Addressing the school's chronic absenteeism and improving academic outcomes should be key priorities for the school and district.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Just to give parents an idea ...my son which is now sixth grader in this school has been doing worst than ever... the years prior he struggled but teachers over all were good with him and he would pull thru and would actually learn because of the support he had from the teachers and me.... this year has gone sooo bad I'm in tears because he's not learning anything the teacher and principle don't care they just want to get thru day and go they dont care if they learn anything......I have complained about changing him but there is no room principle did not budge at all ....(one detail he is in combo class which means one teacher for 2 grades 5th and 6th graders) nobody is learning nothing this year well at least not in this class with that teacher ...if he does pass im afraid he will go to middle school without knowing sixth grades basics.... I really don't recommend this school I am still looking for other ways to help him ....thinking of changing schools hope its not to late in the year. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
