Florence Nightingale Middle

Summary:

Florence Nightingale Middle is a public middle school in Los Angeles, California, serving 790 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the Los Angeles Unified School District, which is ranked 871 out of 1,568 districts in the state.

Florence Nightingale Middle consistently underperforms the district and state in academic achievement, with significantly lower proficiency rates in English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Spanish Language Arts compared to the averages. The school's statewide ranking has declined over the past several years, dropping from 1326 out of 2,715 California middle schools in 2018-2019 to 1431 out of 2,777 in 2023-2024. Certain student subgroups, such as African American students and English Language Learners, struggle the most at the school, ranking in the bottom quartile of California middle schools. Additionally, the school has experienced a notable increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 8.9% in 2017-2018 to 20.6% in 2022-2023, which is significantly higher than the district and state averages.

In contrast to Florence Nightingale Middle, nearby schools like Thomas Starr King Middle School Film and Media Magnet and Washington Irving Mid School Math Music and Engr Magnet consistently outperform Florence Nightingale Middle in academic achievement and other key metrics. However, other nearby schools, such as John H. Liechty Middle and Sal Castro Middle, also struggle with low academic performance and high rates of chronic absenteeism, similar to Florence Nightingale Middle. The high percentage of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch at Florence Nightingale Middle suggests that socioeconomic factors may play a significant role in the school's academic challenges, and the school's high chronic absenteeism rate may also be a contributing factor to its underperformance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My child graduated from here last year. She had honors Algebra and Geometry, and had outstanding experiences in both classes. (Thank you Mr. Lexius and Mr. Flaxenburg!) When she got to high school this year she was so far ahead of the other kids in her math class, and she was the only 9th grader in the class! If you want your child to excel in math, then this is definitely the school to choose. Close Quote

Test scores good for our part. The good students are heading to college, the bad students are keeping the scores down. Charter schools kick them out, Nightingale has to baby sit them. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
