While Micheltorena Street Elementary outperforms the nearby Mayberry Street Elementary and Lockwood Avenue Elementary, it lags behind the higher-performing Clifford Street Elementary Math & Technology Magnet in terms of overall statewide ranking and academic proficiency. This may be due to the fact that Micheltorena Street Elementary has a relatively lower percentage of free and reduced-price lunch recipients (34.12% in 2022-2023) compared to the nearby schools, which have much higher rates, suggesting it serves a more economically diverse student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I am a parent of two children at Micheltorena, who have both been there since the first grade. This is a quiet, friendly neighborhood elementary school, a school where the office staff, teachers and kids really LIKE each other; you can see and feel it when you walk onto the campus. The principal is outstanding; she is always accessible to the parents and public when they have questions, concerns, or just want to discuss new ideas for the school.

The teachers are well credentialed and very experienced, as is described on their teacher pages on the school's website, http://www.micheltoren...; many of the teachers live local to the school and are active in the community. Next year, the school will implement the first year of its dual language program.

The school does not appear "great" when condensed into numbers and statistics on websites that focus on API scores; Micheltorena has roughly 25% of its student population as special needs / speical education students, many of them coming from surrounding school districts like Ivanhoe and Franklin. When the API score, which includes test scores from these special education kids, is compiled, many parents are turned off and assume that the the scores are due to poor academics. However, my children have excelled at the school with teachers that they love, who are willing to individualize their teaching plans to different students' needs. The parents of children in the gifted program also report that their children are challenged and provided with instruction that meets their needs as well.

The school has always focused on the arts, and at one time had the biggest elementary school orchestra in Los Angeles. It still has its orchestra which all children in grades 4th through 6th can participate in. Now the school is partnering with local arts organizations Silver Lake Conservatory of Music and Bluepalm, both who have supplemented the existing art curriculum with increased instruction and classes.

And with the school garden that is co-managed by Silver Lake Neighborhood Council members and is open to the community, the school has truly become a community center.

It is a wonderful experience to be a parent at this school. Come join us! Close Quote

Open Quote Can't say enough good about this school. Especially the Kindergarten teacher Ms Markarian. My son loves his class and is excelling. Also the principle Ms Furfari is very supportive of the kids and parents. They have music classes with the Silverlake Conservatory of Music. It's awesome to see all these kids walking to school carrying instruments. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
