Betty Plasencia Elementary

Summary:

Betty Plasencia Elementary is a public elementary school in Los Angeles, California, serving 441 students in grades K-5. The school is part of the Los Angeles Unified School District, which is ranked 871 out of 1,568 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite being part of the same district, Betty Plasencia Elementary consistently underperforms nearby schools, including Union Avenue Elementary and Gratts Learning Academy for Young Scholars. The school has experienced high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 12.4% to 45.5% in recent years, which is significantly higher than the nearby schools. Academically, Betty Plasencia Elementary lags behind the district and state averages in both English Language Arts and Mathematics, with particularly low performance in 5th-grade Math.

Further analysis reveals that the school's student population faces significant socioeconomic challenges, with 94-96% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. This high rate of poverty may be a contributing factor to the school's academic struggles. Interestingly, nearby charter schools like N.E.W. Academy of Science and Arts and Gabriella Charter tend to outperform Betty Plasencia Elementary, despite serving similar student populations. Addressing the issues of chronic absenteeism and socioeconomic factors will be crucial for improving the educational outcomes at Betty Plasencia Elementary.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
