Hinton Area Elementary

Summary:

Hinton Area Elementary is a public elementary school in Hinton, West Virginia, serving 310 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Summers County Schools district, which is ranked 52 out of 55 districts in the state and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Hinton Area Elementary consistently ranks among the lowest-performing elementary schools in West Virginia, ranking 367th out of 368 schools in the 2023-2024 school year. The school's proficiency rates in Mathematics, English Language Arts, and Science are significantly lower than the state and district averages across all grade levels. Additionally, the school has a predominantly white student population (89.68%) and a high percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds (73.79% receive free or reduced-price lunch). Nearby schools, such as Talcott Elementary School and Jumping Branch Elementary School, which are also part of the Summers County Schools district, perform better academically than Hinton Area Elementary.

The persistent underperformance of Hinton Area Elementary suggests that the school may be facing significant challenges in providing a quality education to its students. The racial and socioeconomic disparities observed at the school may contribute to these academic challenges, and addressing them will likely require a comprehensive, data-driven approach that targets the specific needs of the school and its student population. While the school's low student-teacher ratio (ranging from 12.4 to 14.0 students per teacher) suggests that class size may not be a significant factor, other factors, such as teacher quality, curriculum, and school leadership, may play a more significant role in the school's academic outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Poor parental involvement policies that deter parental involvement, lack of appropriate expenditures to facilitate better educational policies ( at one point the Summers County Superintendent made just 20K less than the WV State Superintendent while teachers make the state mandated minimum salary and lack necessary tools and training to meet the needs of Summers County Schools students), and last but not least, as of November 1, 2016, at least one third grade class has not had a graded writing assignment. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
