Leon Elementary School

Summary:

Leon Elementary School is a small public elementary school serving grades PK-6 in the rural town of Leon, West Virginia. With just 136 students, the school has a very homogeneous student population, with 98.53% of students identifying as White, significantly higher than the racial diversity seen in nearby schools and the state as a whole.

Academically, Leon Elementary School's performance is mixed compared to district and state averages. While the school performs well in some grade levels and subjects, such as 6th grade Math and English Language Arts, it struggles in others, particularly 5th grade Math and Science. When compared to other elementary schools in the Mason County Schools district and surrounding areas, Leon Elementary School's performance is generally below average. For instance, in 3rd grade Math, the school's proficiency rate of 47.4% was lower than the district average of 46.2% and the state average of 53.2%.

One potential contributing factor to the school's academic challenges is the high percentage of economically disadvantaged students, with 64.54% of Leon Elementary School students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch in the 2020-2021 school year. Research has shown that students from low-income backgrounds often face additional barriers to academic success, and schools serving these populations may require additional resources and support to help close achievement gaps. To improve student outcomes, the school and district may need to focus on implementing research-based instructional strategies, providing targeted support for struggling students, and exploring ways to leverage the school's small size and low student-teacher ratio as strengths.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
