Hillpoint Elementary

Summary:

Hillpoint Elementary is a public elementary school in Suffolk, Virginia, serving 737 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Suffolk City Public Schools district, which is ranked 66 out of 130 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating.

Hillpoint Elementary faces significant academic challenges, consistently ranking in the bottom half of Virginia elementary schools over the past 10 years. The school has a much higher percentage of African American students (57.8%) compared to nearby schools, and its performance is particularly low for African American, multi-racial, and low socioeconomic status student subgroups. Despite increased funding and a relatively low student-teacher ratio, Hillpoint's academic outcomes remain below the district and state averages across most subject areas and grade levels. In comparison, some nearby schools within the Suffolk City Public Schools district, such as Creekside Elementary, Kilby Shores Elementary, and Florence Bowser Elementary, perform significantly better and rank in the middle to upper half of Virginia elementary schools.

When comparing Hillpoint Elementary to schools in the neighboring Chesapeake City Public Schools district, such as Southwestern Elementary and Edwin W. Chittum Elementary, the performance gap is even more pronounced, with the Chesapeake schools significantly outperforming Hillpoint Elementary across multiple subject areas and grade levels. These comparisons highlight the need for a deeper examination of the factors contributing to Hillpoint's struggles and the development of targeted interventions to address these issues.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I am sad to say our family has not had a very good experience at Hillpoint Elementary. I have two children that attend there. We are going into our second year with this school. One of my children is special needs. She is on the Autism Spectrum. We have had countless meetings regarding our daughters educational needs and have come to realize The Principal and all teachers that we have dealt with thus far with the exception of one do the bare minimum when teaching our child. We feel like she is getting left behind.
In addition My daughter has encountered severe bulling. In the 2015 school year she was chocked by another student in the bathroom. This school year (2016) she was hit in the head at the playground causing a concussion and laceration to the back of her head. Mind you the very same day there were two other major injuries. Granted accidents happen and kids do occasionally get hurt but I feel like there is a pattern here. Maybe teachers should monitor the children a little better. I live right behind the school and on occasion when I'm taking my walks most of the time you will see the teachers hanging out by the door of the school that leads out to the play ground chatting instead of walking around monitoring the kids on the playground. Open Quote This is the newest and best school in the area. Safe neighborhood, excellent facilities and staff which were pillaged from surround schools. They took the cream of the crop. Send them somewhere else and you will be disappointed. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
