As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This is the very worst school in the state of Virginia. The teachers and principal are appalling. There are horrible standards and our very intelligent child was told to "dumb down" and stop using his robust vocabulary because other students did not understand big words. This school reprimands students for every small infraction. Even use of an unusual phrase is considered a threat. Our child was asked by another child what the meaning of "going postal" meant. He explained it accurately to another child who then reported our child for explaining that a postal employee used a gun in his crime. Our child was punished for accurately explaining what going postal means. We had to hire a lawyer to represent us in this ridiculous situation. I highly recommend either moving from this school's jurisdiction or hoke schooling your kids during middle school years. These were the worst years of our lives while our child attended this horrid poorly staffed and outrageously run pretense of a school. Run for your lives. Do not enroll your kids at Louise Benton Middle School under any circumstances. We had a myriad of other abuses from this school. I only cited a couple in this review. Stay clear. Close Quote

Open Quote I have been dealing with this school for ten years. Test scores are always at the top of the county. Teachers and administration are professional and hard working. The fact that there has been little staff turn over ( and when a vacancy comes up other teachers in the county want to come) attests to the fact that teachers are happy at Benton. Teachers who like their jobs mean a happy environment for students. Many of the staff have masters degrees and all are involved in professional education development to keep current with educational research.

Staff devotes after school hours to clubs, activities, and extra help to struggling students.

I have lived all over the United States and abroad. My children were in many schools thoughout their education. I believe that if parents are unhappy with the quality of the Benton staff and school performance, they are not likely to be happy anywhere. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
