Parkside Middle

Summary:

Parkside Middle is a public magnet middle school located in Manassas, Virginia, serving grades 6-8 with a student population of 1,421. The school is part of the Prince William County Public Schools district, which is ranked 39 out of 130 school districts in Virginia and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Parkside Middle faces several challenges, including its consistently low statewide ranking, ranging from 249 to 320 out of 415-422 Virginia middle schools over the past several years, with a 1-2 star rating from SchoolDigger. The school's performance on SOL (Standards of Learning) tests varies significantly across different subject areas and grade levels, with the school excelling in Algebra I and Geometry but struggling in Mathematics, Science, and English Reading. Parkside Middle's performance on student subgroups is also uneven, ranking highly for African American and White students but struggling with Hispanic, English Language Learner, and Low Socioeconomic Status students. The school's high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (62.07%), coupled with its lower spending per student ($7,500 in 2020-2021), suggests that the school may face additional challenges in providing resources and support for its student population.

Compared to nearby schools, Gainesville Middle and E.H. Marsteller Middle, both part of the Prince William County Public Schools district, consistently outperform Parkside Middle on statewide rankings and SOL test scores, with higher proficiency rates across most subject areas. Rocky Run Middle, part of the Fairfax County Public Schools district, is a high-performing school that significantly outperforms Parkside Middle on statewide rankings and SOL test scores, particularly in Mathematics and English Reading. The schools in the Manassas City Public Schools district, such as Grace E. Metz Middle and Manassas Park Middle, have similar demographic profiles to Parkside Middle, with high percentages of Hispanic and low-income students, and generally lower academic performance compared to the surrounding schools.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I was a student at Parkside 40 years ago. It's was a terrible school then and it looks like the prevailing attitude of apathy is still alive and well, more's the pity. Close Quote

Open Quote I have had a poor experience here at Parkside Middle School. The curriculum is low quality and is boring from what I have heard. The school is poorly organized and people are too busy to help the students. I would not recommend this school. Close Quote

Open Quote Very bad school, the staff is highly unorganized and has no idea what their doing, they hate their jobs and are unhappy. Some don't even know what their job is. I've been yelled at and hung up on by the staff, they all hate eachother and its a shame that the incredible principal has to manage this sorry excuse for a staff. She is so embarresed im really sorry for her. Its hard to do anything you have to get security checks and passes and verifications im not a terrorist i just need to leave class to go to the bathroom/talk to the counselor. The teachers are OK some are good. It's boring and every day its just school schooll not very hands-on or fun. The staff takes forever it took my 5 days sraight to register and they weren't helpful. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
