Auburn High

Summary:

Auburn High is a public high school located in Riner, Virginia, serving grades 9-12 with a student population of 381. The school is part of the Montgomery County Public Schools district, which is ranked 42 out of 130 school districts in Virginia and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Auburn High stands out for its consistently strong academic performance, with high proficiency rates on state assessments that often exceed district and state averages. For example, the school's proficiency rates in Algebra I (94.83%), Algebra II (92.31%), and Biology (94.29% for 9th grade) are particularly impressive. Additionally, Auburn High's student-teacher ratio of 11:1 is lower than nearby schools like Blacksburg High and Christiansburg High, which may contribute to more personalized attention and support for students. However, the school has a significantly higher percentage of white students (94.49%) compared to the surrounding schools, which have more diverse student populations.

Another interesting finding is that Auburn High's performance on state assessments is particularly strong for certain student subgroups, such as low socioeconomic status students and disabled students, who rank in the top 20 and 20 out of 253 Virginia high schools, respectively, in the 2023-2024 school year. This suggests that the school is effectively supporting the academic success of these students, despite the school's relatively high percentage of economically disadvantaged students (43.83% receive free or reduced-price lunch). The school's high spending per student ($10,230 in 2020-2021) may also contribute to its academic success, as it suggests the school has access to adequate resources and funding to support student learning.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Auburn High School might be considered by some to be an average rural Virginia school. Having had one child graduate from Auburn in 2011 and another attending Auburn High (Class of 2015), I can tell you that our experience with Auburn is far from average. The school is filled with caring teachers and workers who genuinely care about students academic and overall welfare. Teachers and workers here are members of our small rural Virginia community who deeply care about the children and their success in school and life. There are things that need improvement - access to advanced electives and facilities (new school under construction) among them - but overall the Auburn/Riner Community has been a tremendous place to raise a family and prepare our children for the world ahead. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
