Sully Elementary

Summary:

Sully Elementary is a public elementary school located in Sterling, Virginia, serving grades PK-5 with a student population of 462. The school is part of the Loudoun County Public Schools district, which is ranked 24th out of 130 school districts in Virginia and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite its relatively low student-teacher ratio and high per-student spending, Sully Elementary faces significant academic challenges. The school consistently ranks in the bottom 20% of Virginia elementary schools, with its students performing significantly lower than the Loudoun County and Virginia state averages on SOL (Standards of Learning) tests. For example, in 2023-2024, only 32.05% of 3rd graders at Sully Elementary were proficient or better in SOL English Reading, compared to 73.29% in Loudoun County and 66.88% statewide. The school's rankings for specific student subgroups, such as Hispanic students, English Language Learners, and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, are also in the bottom 50% of Virginia elementary schools.

Sully Elementary's unique student racial makeup, with a majority Hispanic student population (84.2% in 2022-2023) and a relatively low percentage of White students (5.84% in 2022-2023), may present both challenges and opportunities for the school. The nearby schools, such as Sugarland Elementary, Sterling Elementary, and Guilford Elementary, generally perform better academically than Sully Elementary, with higher rankings and better SOL test scores. Ongoing collaboration with the Loudoun County Public Schools district, as well as targeted interventions and support for the school's subgroups, may be necessary to improve Sully Elementary's academic performance and provide a more equitable educational experience for its students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school has some of the most passionate and attentive teachers to walk the streets of Loudoun County. I have seen successful science fairs and excited children leave Sully due to the amazing teachers who refuse to give up on them. I am disappointed with the poor ratings this school has, but I'm happy that the teachers don't treat the students like they are "1 star". Looking forward to the future of Sully Elementary- I believe in it. Close Quote

Open Quote This school is very terrible. The teachers are okay. The people in the office are just plain mean, they treat you as if you are below them because they know English. There is one lady who has been there for ten years, and she's the meanest and also very bossy. The principal sounds so nice and different on the phone then compared to when you meet her in person. In person, she makes no eye contact and doesn't greet you. I wished I had a choice, if I did I wouldn't allow my children to go to this school. Close Quote

Open Quote This school is horrible. The people in the office are not helpful and very rude. The atmosphere is far from a fun and friendly learning environment that you would hope for in an elementary school I dreaded sending my daughter here every day. I did not feel like the well being of the children were what was important to them. There is also a real language barrier at this school and I did not feel like the teachers were addressing it effectively. If I didn't have to give it one star I would give it none. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
