Hutchison Elementary

Summary:

Hutchison Elementary is a public elementary school in Herndon, Virginia, serving 1,070 students in grades PK-6. The school is part of the Fairfax County Public Schools district, which is ranked 41 out of 130 school districts in Virginia.

Despite its diverse student population, Hutchison Elementary consistently ranks in the bottom 10% of Virginia elementary schools, with significantly lower academic performance than the district and state averages on state assessments. The school's reading and math proficiency rates are particularly concerning, with Hispanic students, English Language Learners, and students from low-income backgrounds struggling the most. Interestingly, nearby schools like Floris Elementary and Dranesville Elementary generally perform much better on state assessments and have higher statewide rankings.

Despite Hutchison Elementary's relatively high per-student spending and low student-teacher ratio, the school's academic performance suggests that resources may not be the primary issue. The unique needs of the school's diverse student population, as well as factors such as curriculum, instruction, and support services, may be areas for improvement. Addressing these challenges will be crucial in driving progress and better serving the Herndon community.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The education is sub par at best. The lice problem is out of control. My daughter came home with lice 4 times this year alone. We had to buy special shampoo that helped prevent lice. She brought home report cards with grades in outstanding achievement but less then outstanding in effort. If my daughter has to put forth no effort to achieve outstanding, I think that may be something the school should be concerned with. She was in the first grade this past year. She brought home a homework packet every week and one of the pages was 100 squares that she had to put numbers 1-100 in. She got it on the first try. Were there other students that couldn't count by the end of the first grade? The homework packet was supposed to be for the whole week and she would finish everything in about a half hour. None of the school staff could agree on the schedules and they were quick to reprimand the parents if you followed the wrong staff members instructions. The principal... don't even know who the principal was. My wife met her in person once and instead of answering the one question my wife had, she sent my wife to the office to schedule an appointment. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
