Longdale Elementary

Summary:

Longdale Elementary is a public elementary school located in Glen Allen, Virginia, serving grades PK-5 with a student population of 474. The school is part of the Henrico County Public Schools district, which is ranked 88 out of 130 school districts in Virginia and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Longdale Elementary faces significant challenges, with a consistently low academic performance that places it in the bottom 20% of Virginia elementary schools, earning a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. The school has a significantly higher percentage of African American students (49.79%) compared to the surrounding schools, which tend to have a higher percentage of White students. Additionally, Longdale Elementary has an extremely high percentage of students (89.66%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population. Despite the high per-student spending ($11,126 in 2020-2021), the school's academic performance, as measured by SOL test scores, is significantly lower than the Henrico County and Virginia state averages across all grade levels and subject areas.

The nearby schools, such as Glen Allen Elementary and Greenwood Elementary, have significantly higher academic performance and lower percentages of economically disadvantaged students, suggesting that Longdale Elementary may face unique challenges in serving its student population. The school's declining academic performance over the past decade, coupled with the significant racial achievement gaps, indicates that factors such as access to resources, teacher quality, and student support services may be contributing to the school's challenges.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote We love Longdale!!!! We first found out about Longdale when our Exceptional Education student was transferring there, he now goes to Hermitage, I still have 2 enrolled there. They were the only indoor campus that offered his programs. The teachers and staff were so amazing, understanding, kind, caring, accepting and compassionate. I am not just talking about the Exceptional Ed teachers and aids it was the whole school. They all took the time to know my child and our family, with open welcoming arms, so much so that we decided to relocate into Longdales district so that all (5) of our children would attend there. With Longdale you will have that small town feel in a city/county setting. To them your child is not just another score on a testing form. The teachers, administration and staff go above and beyond. They work with your child's specific needs to obtain a plan that is going to allow them to excel and find their highest learning potential. There is no place I would want my kids go to school then Longdale!! Close Quote

Open Quote Longdale is a wonderful school. The principal is friendly and fair. The teachers are knowledgeable and teach their students to excel in all academic areas. The teachers are consistently looking for new ways to teach the material, while still using time tested ways. They don't over test their students, but push their students to be successful in all areas! I am extremely pleased with Longdale Elementary School. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
