John Randolph Tucker High

Summary:

John Randolph Tucker High is a public magnet high school serving grades 9-12 in Richmond, Virginia, part of the Henrico County Public Schools district. With a diverse student population, the school has seen a decline in its academic performance in recent years, ranking 246th out of 329 Virginia high schools in 2023-2024 with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

While the school performs well in some subject areas like Algebra II and English Reading, it struggles in others like World History and Biology, with lower proficiency rates compared to the district and state. Student group performance also varies significantly, with Asian and White students generally outperforming African American, Hispanic, and English Language Learner students. The school's high percentage of low-income students, with 59.76% receiving free or reduced-price lunch, is a contributing factor to its lower academic outcomes, particularly for this subgroup.

Interestingly, Deep Run High, Glen Allen High, and Mills E. Godwin High, all high-performing magnet schools in the Henrico County Public Schools district, are located in close proximity to John Randolph Tucker High and consistently outperform it on academic measures. Despite these challenges, the school's diverse student population and strengths in certain subject areas suggest that there may be opportunities for improvement if the school can effectively address the underlying factors contributing to its current performance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Everyone dissed me for going to Tucker when I was zoned for Freeman. But I LOVE Tucker everyone is so inclusive and caring, and everyone is different so it's okay to not have the best clothes or style because it won't matter. I no longer feel pressured by the rich kids to wear rich kid stuff. Close Quote

Open Quote Truly a great school. Very strong international focus with many specialty centers including the International Baccalaureate and Language Immersion. Phenomenal theatre program and varied sports programs for students to participate in. Academically rigorous. No bullying and very few "cliques" - students have wide social circles with students from many different specialty centers and activities. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
