Atlee High

Summary:

Atlee High is a public high school located in Mechanicsville, Virginia, serving grades 9-12 with a student population of 1,526. It is part of the Hanover County Public Schools district, which is ranked 21 out of 130 school districts in Virginia and has a 4-star rating.

Atlee High consistently ranks among the top high schools in Virginia, often placing in the top 5%. The school's students perform exceptionally well on SOL (Standards of Learning) tests, with proficiency rates significantly higher than the Hanover County and Virginia state averages across various subjects and grade levels. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, 97.52% of Atlee High's 9th graders were proficient or better in Geometry, compared to 94.5% for Hanover County and 85.92% for Virginia. Atlee High's strong performance extends across different student subgroups, including female, male, Asian, Hispanic, White, African American, and multi-racial students, as well as those from low socioeconomic backgrounds and with disabilities.

Compared to nearby schools, Mechanicsville High and Hanover High perform well but lag behind Atlee High in overall rankings and test scores. The Richmond City high schools, such as Thomas Jefferson High, Armstrong High, John Marshall High, and Richmond Community High, generally have lower performance compared to Atlee High, with significantly lower test scores and statewide rankings. This may be partly attributable to Atlee High's more affluent student population, as the school has a relatively low percentage of free and reduced-price lunch recipients compared to the nearby Richmond City schools.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My oldest son is now a sophomore at Atlee. The teachers seem very attentive to his needs. My son has a high functioning form of Autism. (Aspergers Syndrome)He is very intelligent and has moved into AP and IB studies. Some of his teachers have personally called me to let me know how well he has been working with them and other students in his class. The counselors are always willing to meet with me if I have any concerns. My younger son will be attending the school need year. He has ADHD and an SLD. I hope that the same communication will continue in regards to my younger sons issues. My biggest problem is not with the school but the state of Virginia's new policies and requirements regarding High School Diploma's. It will be difficult for my younger son to acquire a standard High School Diploma. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
