Hunter B. Andrews

Summary:

Hunter B. Andrews is an elementary school serving grades PK-8 in Hampton, Virginia, part of the Hampton City Public Schools district. With a diverse student population, the school has faced academic challenges, particularly in mathematics, and significant disparities in performance between different student subgroups.

While Hunter B. Andrews has seen fluctuations in its statewide ranking, it has areas of strength, such as 100% proficiency in Geometry, Algebra I, and Earth Science for 8th grade, outperforming the district and state averages. However, the school struggles in 3rd-7th grade Mathematics, with proficiency rates ranging from 44.44% to 70.45%, lower than the district and state. The school's performance also varies significantly across different student subgroups, with African American students generally performing better than their peers statewide, while White and multi-racial students rank in the bottom 30% of Virginia elementary schools for their respective subgroups.

Compared to other elementary schools in the Hampton City Public Schools district, Hunter B. Andrews generally performs on par or slightly below the district average, but its performance is notably lower than that of Armstrong Elementary, a nearby school that has consistently ranked among the top elementary schools in Virginia. The high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds at Hunter B. Andrews, with 81.08% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, likely contributes to the school's academic challenges and highlights the need for targeted interventions and support to address the underlying factors influencing student learning.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Okay at best and only if your child has no learning disabilities. It's almost impossible to have a 504 plan or IEP written unless your child is acting out behavior wise, not even with written expressed need from a DOCTOR of psychology! They will happily let your child fail every year then pass them at the end with D's. Bullying is another problem. They don't address it and even if the child tells an adult nothing is done. It basically comes down to the parent harassing the school just to get the staff to do anything about it. I can't say I like this school. It looks nice and relatively new and the staff seems good but ultimately they are inept and ineffective. I've had 3 children attend, 2 have been bullied, one has been allowed to struggle multiple years with them refusing to address it even after a diagnosis and 1 child who is in highschool now, has never complained other than letting it slip that he was bullied but he didn't care because it was a girl and he didn't find her threatening. My first experience there was enrolling my son...a pissed off mother was in the office stating that her son has called her from the bathrooms where he was hiding saying that people were threatening to beat him up and that she was going to call the police if they did not do something about it. I recall the office staff trying to shush and quiet her but it was not the first experience that a parent would want to witness or have when they are enrolling their child. I should have seen it as a warning but did not. I don't like my children being zoned for this school. Even the bus rides are awful and again nothing is done about these out of control violent kids Close Quote

Open Quote My step son goes to this school. So far no real problems. My 5 yr old will be starting kindergarten in september.Hopefully all goes well. The school is fairly new, it's clean, the staff seems nice enough. It's a large school, but the middle school is seperate. I don't care for the combined elm/middle school idea. Other than that, so far so good Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
