Abingdon Elementary

Summary:

Abingdon Elementary is a public elementary school in Arlington, Virginia, serving 715 students in grades PK-5. While part of the highly-ranked Arlington County Public Schools district, Abingdon Elementary has a relatively diverse student population and lags behind the district and state averages in academic performance.

Abingdon Elementary's student body is more racially diverse than some nearby schools like Oakridge Elementary and Barcroft Elementary. However, its academic performance, as measured by SOL test scores, is generally lower than the district and state averages. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the percentage of 3rd, 4th, and 5th-grade students proficient or better in SOL/Mathematics was 57.72%, 65.57%, and 48.74%, respectively, compared to the district averages of 76.71%, 78.52%, and 78.53%. Abingdon Elementary has also consistently ranked in the bottom half of Virginia elementary schools over the past few years.

The school's performance varies significantly across different student subgroups, with White students performing much better than Hispanic and African American students. Additionally, Abingdon Elementary has a relatively high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, which may be a contributing factor to its lower academic achievement. While part of a highly-ranked district, Abingdon Elementary's declining performance and disparities in subgroup achievement suggest the need for targeted interventions and support to improve student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The worst school ever. Principal doesn't care about kids. There is bullying issue, kissing issue at school. Principal is a joke and only is interested in her teachers. No room parents. Will discourage you from lunch and recess. PTA president is like a high schooler who keeps it only to her friends. Give other parents all useless work.. very bad school un monitored recess.. I would never put my kids Close Quote

Open Quote Abingdon has a fantastic partnership with the Kennedy Center. There is a wonderful focus on the arts--music, drama, art. Every fourth grader learns to play the violin. Students have architecture classes. The teachers are caring and supportive. Joanne Uyeda, the principal is excellent. My children love going to school at Abingdon! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
