Huffman Elementary

Summary:

Huffman Elementary is a public elementary school in Plano, Texas, serving 559 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Plano Independent School District, which is ranked 185 out of 968 districts in Texas and has a 4-star rating.

Huffman Elementary has a diverse student population, with a racial makeup of 23.79% White, 29.7% African American, 25.22% Hispanic, and 12.16% Asian. However, the school's academic performance, as measured by STAAR test scores, is generally lower than the district and state averages. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the percentage of students proficient or better in STAAR Reading ranged from 55.41% to 61.97% across grades 3-5, compared to the district's 63.32% to 71.19% and the state's 48.85% to 53.96%. Similarly, in STAAR Mathematics, Huffman's proficiency rates ranged from 42.31% to 47.89%, compared to the district's 56.82% to 66.81% and the state's 40.86% to 48.96%. Additionally, Huffman Elementary has a relatively high percentage of students from low-income families, with 47.94% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch.

When compared to nearby schools within the same district, Huffman Elementary generally performs lower academically, particularly in STAAR Reading and Mathematics. Schools like Hightower Elementary and Centennial Elementary, which have higher percentages of White and Asian students and lower percentages of low-income students, consistently outperform Huffman Elementary on these assessments. The school's performance, along with its fluctuating statewide ranking and potential achievement gaps among subgroups, suggests the need for targeted interventions and resource allocation to address these challenges and improve student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Our Son I had a great experience at Huffman Elementary. It is a diverse school with kids from different backgrounds, which I think is positive compared to the other schools in this district, which are predominately white Asian, and high income.

We Moved here from out of state and have many schools to compare this one to you, and we thought the teachers and principal were attentive, and we’re happy that our son made friends from all walks of life. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
