New Caney High School

Summary:

New Caney High School is a public high school serving 2,428 students in grades 9-12 in the New Caney Independent School District in Texas, with a predominantly Hispanic student population.

While New Caney High School maintains a relatively high 4-year graduation rate of 92-94%, it has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Texas high schools and holds a 2-star rating, indicating below-average performance compared to other schools in the state. The school's STAAR EOC test scores lag behind state and district averages across all subject areas, with proficiency rates 5-15 percentage points lower. This underperformance is particularly pronounced for subgroups like English Language Learners, Special Education students, and Economically Disadvantaged students. In comparison, Infinity Early College High School, also part of the New Caney ISD, significantly outperforms New Caney High School on key metrics.

New Caney High School faces additional challenges, including a high percentage (77.68%) of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a relatively low-income student population. The school has also seen a decline in enrollment over the past three years, from 2,504 students in 2020-2021 to 2,428 in 2022-2023, along with a shift in its racial composition, with the percentage of White students decreasing from 31.35% to 25.82%, and the percentage of Hispanic students increasing from 61% to 64.87%. Addressing these academic achievement gaps, particularly for underperforming subgroups, should be a priority for the school and district.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I’m currently singled out by the teacher. I’m a junior and I passed all my classes. I was in class and I kept asking the teacher for help multiple times. She flat out ignored me. I started to cry And she told me to “stop complaining” I went to the school administration and they would not do anything. I’ve also come and talk to them before due to the bussing problems when 4 people have to sit in the same seat and sometimes on the floor and due to the issue of traffic in the mornings. I honestly would never go to the school again or ever send my kids there Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
