Thompson Elementary

Summary:

Thompson Elementary is a public elementary school in Mesquite, Texas, serving 608 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Mesquite Independent School District, which is ranked 601 out of 968 districts in Texas and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Thompson Elementary consistently ranks in the bottom quartile of Texas elementary schools, with significantly below-average performance on STAAR tests across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2023-2024, only 19.09% of 3rd graders were proficient or better in STAAR Reading, compared to 40.57% for the district and 48.85% for the state. The school's performance is particularly low in STAAR Mathematics and Science, with only 13.89% of 3rd graders proficient or better in Mathematics and 3.41% of 5th graders proficient or better in Science. These low academic outcomes are consistent across different student subgroups, with African American and Hispanic students, as well as students with special needs and economically disadvantaged students, performing much lower than their peers.

While the nearby Mackey Elementary, Shaw Elementary, and Gentry Elementary schools generally perform better than Thompson Elementary on STAAR tests, they also serve high percentages of economically disadvantaged students, ranging from 75% to 92%. The exception is the Pioneer Technology (PTAA) Mesquite Elementary, a public charter school in the area, which has a lower percentage of economically disadvantaged students (46.18%) and generally outperforms the district and state on STAAR tests. Addressing the challenges faced by Thompson Elementary will require a comprehensive, data-driven approach that addresses the underlying factors contributing to the school's struggles and leverages the strengths and best practices of nearby schools.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Students are out of control. Students cursing, vandalizing the walls and restrooms, fighting, talking back, arguing, and screaming at teachers, and running down the halls at full sprints is the daily norm. There are no consequences for severely disrespectful behavior, therefore it just gets worse and worse. Teachers feel defeated and unsupported on a daily basis. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
