Pirrung Elementary

Summary:

Pirrung Elementary is a public elementary school in Mesquite, Texas, serving 446 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Mesquite Independent School District, which is ranked 601 out of 968 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Pirrung Elementary consistently ranks in the bottom quartile of Texas elementary schools, with academic performance significantly below the Mesquite ISD and Texas state averages across all grade levels and subjects. The school's performance is particularly low for African American and economically disadvantaged students, ranking in the bottom 15-20% of Texas schools for these subgroups. However, the school appears to provide more effective support for its English Language Learner (ELL) and special education populations, with these students performing relatively better compared to their peers at the school.

Interestingly, Pirrung Elementary performs significantly worse than most of the other elementary schools in the Mesquite ISD, such as Mackey Elementary, Moss Elementary, Gentry Elementary, and Rutherford Elementary, which generally have higher STAAR proficiency rates and higher overall school rankings, despite serving similar student populations. This suggests that factors beyond just student demographics, such as school leadership, teaching quality, and instructional practices, may be contributing to the performance differences between Pirrung and its neighbors.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The teachers are fine, The leadership meaning the principal and vice principal are more concerned about trying to control the parents then they are about the kids education they tell you how to fix their hair what to wear and who can and cannot come to the school and if you call to try to get any help from the district superintendent or anybody nobody will help you that's why they do what they want to do I think they are big bullies. And they have no compassion for the underdog. The vice principal is the worst. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
