Mount Carmel Academy

Summary:

Mount Carmel Academy is a public charter high school in Houston, Texas, serving 269 students in grades 9-12. The school has a predominantly Hispanic student population (84.76%), with significant representation from African American (12.27%) and other racial groups.

Mount Carmel Academy stands out for its exceptional academic performance. The school consistently maintains high four-year graduation rates, ranging from 96.6% to 100% over the past five years, significantly outpacing nearby schools like Milby High School (91.3%) and Worthing High School (78.0%). Additionally, Mount Carmel Academy outperforms the Houston Independent School District and the state of Texas in several STAAR End-of-Course assessments, with 69.05% of students proficient or better in Algebra I, compared to 38.03% for Houston ISD and 44.73% for Texas. The school also boasts relatively low dropout rates, ranging from 0.0% to 1.0% over the past five years, lower than nearby schools like Texans Can Academy - Houston Hobby (42.7%).

Despite Mount Carmel Academy's overall strong performance, there are areas for potential improvement. The school's statewide School Digger ranking has declined from a high of 260 out of 1,762 Texas high schools in 2015-2016 to a low of 1,541 out of 1,961 in 2022-2023, suggesting the school may be facing challenges in keeping up with the performance of other high schools in the state. Additionally, the school's performance varies across different student subgroups, with lower rankings for African American and Hispanic students compared to English Language Learner and Special Education students. While Mount Carmel Academy outperforms many nearby schools, it is important to note that these nearby schools, such as Milby High School and Worthing High School, serve larger student populations and have higher percentages of economically disadvantaged students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The school is just terrible. Most of the staff/student's/teachers there are racist, teachers don't care about the amount of homework they give that stress students out to the brink of panic attacks. The principle lies to parents that visit the school with their kids to get more money. What disgusts me is how they tell students to go to another school, practically telling them to leave just because they don't like them. Whenever students do tell their parents, the school lies to the parents and they actually believe them. I recommend nobody to send their kids to that place Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
