Legacy Middle

Summary:

Legacy Middle is a public middle school located in San Antonio, Texas, serving grades 6-8 with a total enrollment of 1,137 students. The school is part of the East Central Independent School District, which is ranked 862 out of 968 districts in Texas and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Legacy Middle faces significant challenges, with a consistently higher percentage of Hispanic students (82.23%) compared to nearby schools, and consistently underperforming on STAAR tests across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2023-2024, the percentage of students proficient or better in STAAR Reading for 6th, 7th, and 8th grades at Legacy Middle were 31.14%, 42.28%, and 35.48%, respectively, compared to the state averages of 54.45%, 52.08%, and 54.09%. The school has also seen a steady increase in dropout rates, from 0.3% in 2017-2018 to 1.2% in 2021-2022, which is higher than the nearby schools. Additionally, Legacy Middle has a high percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, with 58.05% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch in the 2022-2023 school year.

While the nearby schools, such as East Central Heritage Middle and Harlandale Middle, also struggle with low academic performance and high percentages of economically disadvantaged students, Legacy Middle consistently ranks lower and performs worse on standardized tests. The school's consistent underperformance compared to state and district averages, as well as nearby schools, suggests the need for a comprehensive, data-driven approach to address the root causes of the school's struggles and implement effective strategies to support student success.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I went to legacy for 3 years before I went to east central. I think the teachers and staff are wonderful the counslers are easy to talk to, the teacher explain problems to were the whole class can understand. They get you ready for the TAKS from day one showing you ways to help you get threw some problems the kids the year before had problems with. The teachers give you one on one time so the point really sinks in to you. In my opinion I think legacy middle school is the best school in San Antonio but the east central distract is the best trust me. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
