Summary:

Labay Middle is a public middle school in Houston, Texas, serving 1,199 students in grades 6-8. It is part of the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District (Isd), which is ranked 363 out of 968 school districts in Texas and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Labay Middle has a diverse student population, with 54.13% Hispanic, 20.43% African American, 15.18% White, and 6.76% Asian students. Academically, the school's performance on STAAR tests is generally on par with or slightly below the district and state averages, though it excels in Algebra I end-of-course proficiency at 94.78%, significantly higher than the district's 62.98% and the state's 44.73%. However, the school's African American and Hispanic students perform better than the state averages, while its English Language Learner and Special Education students tend to lag behind.

Labay Middle has relatively low dropout rates, ranging from 0.2% to 1.2% over the past few years, lower than nearby schools like Hopper Middle, Campbell Middle, and Watkins Middle. However, the school has a high percentage of students (around 70%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a significant economically disadvantaged population. Addressing the needs of this population and the underperforming student subgroups could be key focus areas for Labay Middle and the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District (Isd).

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I really liked this school and I'm kind of sad to be moving. Most of the teachers were pretty nice as long as you listened and the pizza was so good.
My favorite teacher was Ms. Horner, honestly she's so fun and really gets along with her students. She also passes out candy and chocolate. And overall she really made 7th period a really great way to end the school day. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
