Barnes Elementary

Summary:

Barnes Elementary is a public elementary school in Corpus Christi, Texas, serving grades PK-5 with a student population of 658. The school is part of the Corpus Christi Independent School District (CCISD), which is ranked 595 out of 968 districts in Texas and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Barnes Elementary has consistently ranked in the top half of Texas elementary schools, with strong academic performance on STAAR tests, particularly in 5th-grade reading and math. The school's student population is more diverse than some nearby schools, with a higher percentage of Hispanic students (69.15%) and a lower percentage of White students (20.06%). However, the school faces challenges with an increasing percentage of economically disadvantaged students, with 55.47% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch in 2022-2023. Despite these challenges, Barnes Elementary maintains a relatively low student-teacher ratio, which may contribute to its academic success.

While Barnes Elementary generally outperforms the district and state averages on STAAR tests, some nearby schools, such as Faye Webb Elementary and Mireles Elementary, have higher academic performance and rankings. Analyzing the practices and strategies employed by these higher-performing schools could provide valuable insights for Barnes Elementary to further improve its educational outcomes and support the unique needs of its diverse student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Absolutely love this school. They have put so much effort in with my kids. They never gave up. I moved my kids after 1 year at a different Elementary here in Corpus that I was completely disappointed in. My kids have learned way more than I ever could have expected. The teachers are so reasonable when it comes to meeting with me and take the time to talk to my children and I if need be. The staff, school, and education is amazing here. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
