Bowie High School

Summary:

Bowie High School is a public high school serving 498 students in grades 9-12 in Bowie, Texas, which is part of the Nocona Independent School District (Isd). The school has a predominantly white student population and consistently maintains high graduation rates, well above the state average and nearby schools like Nocona High School, Chico High School, and Alvord High School.

However, Bowie High School's performance on standardized tests is mixed, with strong results in some subjects like Biology and U.S. History, but struggles in Algebra I, where proficiency rates are lower than the state and district averages. The school also has a relatively high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, which is higher than the state average and nearby schools. Interestingly, the school's academic performance varies significantly by student subgroup, with white and multi-racial students performing worse than Hispanic and English Language Learner students.

Over the past several years, Bowie High School's statewide ranking has declined, suggesting the school may be falling behind its peers in overall academic performance. While the school generally performs on par or slightly better than the nearby high schools, it faces challenges in improving its academic outcomes and addressing the racial disparities in student achievement.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This high school has a low Hispanic rate and being the fact that my student was one of them, I can say, after three years, he has not been fairly represented. Not to mention that after having a grading issue with one of the teachers, my student was not fairly judged. I was never showed the media to which I questioned, even after asking to see it several times...If your student is not smart enough to handle grading issues on their own, if you are not rich or in some high status to where you help the school get ahead in some monetary way, don't bother sending you student here. It took all summer to get a response about my issue! Only to have the same outcome as before which was...Never seeing the media and only given the same answer that the teacher gave me and never getting the other issues resolved.-- not satisfied at all. This was only a couple of very many issues I had. I hate to pull the race card but this is one time I feel compelled to and rightfully so. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
