Kocurek Elementary

Summary:

Kocurek Elementary is a public elementary school in Austin, Texas, serving 522 students in grades PK-5 as part of the Austin Independent School District. While the school has access to resources, including a relatively low student-teacher ratio, it faces several challenges, including lower-than-average test scores and achievement gaps between student subgroups.

Kocurek has a higher percentage of Hispanic students (56.9%) compared to the district (55.65%) and state (48.85%) averages, and a lower percentage of White students (30.46%) compared to the district and state. The school's test scores are generally lower than the district and state averages across all grade levels and subjects, with 3rd-grade reading proficiency at 34.85% compared to 55.65% for the district and 48.85% for the state. Additionally, while White students at Kocurek rank relatively high (772 out of 3,106 Texas elementary schools), Hispanic students (4,030 out of 4,401) and English Language Learners (2,096 out of 3,556) rank much lower, indicating significant achievement gaps.

Kocurek's performance has declined over time, dropping from 1,655 out of 4,260 Texas elementary schools in 2013-2014 to 2,804 out of 4,675 in 2023-2024. The school's relatively high spending per student and low student-teacher ratio suggest that resources may not be translating into improved academic outcomes. Compared to nearby schools like Menchaca Elementary, Cunningham Elementary, and Boone Elementary, which have higher test scores and statewide rankings, Kocurek may have room for improvement in aligning its curriculum and instructional practices with higher-performing schools in the area.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I am grateful and elated to be a part of the Kocurek elementary community. The teachers, staff, principal - all people I consider wonderful additions to my community and my children's lives. Families come together here at Kocurek and make the entire school year great. Plus, my kids are learning every single day academically, socially, and growing into fine young people. SO PROUD TO BE A KOCUREK FAMILY! Close Quote

Open Quote I recently visited this school during an observation and the staff there are some of THE rudest people I've had to deal with. I waited for about 5 minutes for one lady to acknowledge the question I was asking out loud. It was very irritating. Although, the're were a lot of great teachers who are genuinely concerned about the children's learning. Close Quote

Open Quote Some of the teachers are amazing. Although, office staff is some of the most rude people. I had a simple question, stood at the counter for a few minutes, while the clerk in front of me, sitting at her desk would not even acknowledge me. When I was finally helped, my question was treated as though it was a waste of her time to answer my question. The more help I needed, the more irritated the office clerk got. Not a place I would leave my child. Close Quote

Open Quote I recently visited this school to observe for a day, and I was very impressed by the hospitality of the faculty and staff, and the encouragement of the teachers within the school. The students have obviously been taught to be respectful of themselves, and others, and it was really an amazing and inspiring place to be. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
