Williams Elementary

Summary:

Williams Elementary is a public elementary school in Austin, Texas, serving 386 students in grades PK-5 as part of the Austin Independent School District (AISD). The school faces several challenges, including a high percentage of economically disadvantaged and Hispanic students, declining performance over the years, and lower test scores and rankings compared to nearby schools and state averages.

Williams Elementary has a significantly higher Hispanic student population (79.53%) compared to the surrounding schools, which range from 55.95% to 92.89% Hispanic students. The school's test scores are generally lower than the AISD and Texas state averages across various subjects and grade levels, with its 3rd grade reading proficiency (36.73%) significantly lower than the AISD (55.65%) and Texas (48.85%) averages. Williams Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Texas elementary schools, with a 3-star rating in 2023-2024 and a 2-star rating in the previous two years, placing it in the bottom 40% of elementary schools in the state.

When compared to other nearby schools in the AISD district, such as Cunningham Elementary, Williams Elementary generally performs worse on standardized tests and has a lower statewide ranking. The school's high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (74.35% in 2022-2023) suggests that it faces significant challenges in supporting its economically disadvantaged student population, which likely contributes to the lower academic performance. Additionally, the high percentage of Hispanic students, many of whom may be English Language Learners, could be a contributing factor to the school's lower performance, particularly in reading and language-based subjects.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My child has been going to Williams since kindergarten and she is now in the 3rd grade. I really love this school, I enjoy how closenit the teachers and staff are and how welcoming it feels here. Also enjoy that if have questions or concerns they are willing to help as quick as possible. Most importantly they put our students first and to help them succeed and have a brighter future. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
