Alamo Heights High School

Summary:

Alamo Heights High School is a public high school serving 1,606 students in grades 9-12 in the affluent Alamo Heights community of San Antonio, Texas. This consistently high-performing school consistently ranks among the top high schools in the state, with impressive academic achievements, low dropout rates, and strong performance across diverse student subgroups.

Alamo Heights High School's academic excellence is evident in its 4-star rating from SchoolDigger and its ranking of 276 out of 1,987 schools in Texas for the 2023-2024 school year. The school's students excel on STAAR End-of-Course exams, with significantly higher proficiency rates compared to state and district averages in subjects like Biology, English I and II Reading, and U.S. History. Additionally, the school maintains an exceptionally high four-year graduation rate, ranging from 94.3% to 97.7% over the past five years, well above the state average.

When compared to nearby schools, Alamo Heights High School stands out as a top-performing institution. While the school's student population is predominantly White, it has a significant Hispanic and Asian student population, and the school's performance across racial subgroups is generally strong, indicating a commitment to equity and inclusion. However, the school's relatively low percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch (17.31% in 2022-2023) suggests that it may not be as socioeconomically diverse as some other schools in the area, which could have implications for its approach to supporting students from lower-income backgrounds.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This used to a great school district, on par with Highland Park in Dallas, but now the District is becoming more Latino and the scores are going down, the District is at the tipping point, hopefully more of the bad apartments in the District get razed and the Demographics shift or else they better add a few new wings to St Mary’s Hall and stop passing bonds to improve schools in AHISD. It’s a shame, but someone should have drawn the lines to just include Olmos Park AH, and Terrell Hills, not that awful area up near Wal Mart and all those cheap apartments. Ruining a once great district. I’d still send my kids, but it’s at the tipping point, they better figure something out to boost the Anglo numbers or its curtains Close Quote

Open Quote I graduated Alamo Heights in 1966. This education alone is college level today. Our school had no technology(electronics) in those days. You had to use your head and THINK, which is not going around much these days. READ, erudition is free!!! Use it to your advantage, be kind to your fellow man, who did not get such a well founded basis of Knowledge. Study, learn, and apply yourself. Shalom.... Chuck Donahue Class of 1966 Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
