Summary:

Nyos Lamar Secondary is a public charter high school in Austin, Texas, serving grades 6-12 with a total enrollment of 293 students. This high-performing school consistently ranks in the top 30% of Texas high schools and outperforms many nearby public schools, including Pflugerville High School, Navarro Early College High School, and John B. Connally High School, on various academic metrics.

Nyos Lamar Secondary's academic performance is exceptional, with proficiency rates on STAAR tests that are significantly higher than the state average across multiple subjects and grade levels. The school's four-year graduation rate is consistently high, ranging from 90.5% to 96.8% over the past five years, and its dropout rate is very low, ranging from 0.2% to 1.3%. Additionally, the school's diverse student population, with a racial/ethnic makeup that is more balanced compared to many nearby schools, demonstrates strong academic outcomes across all subgroups.

While Nyos Lamar Secondary outperforms many nearby schools, some local charter schools, such as Idea Rundberg College Preparatory, also demonstrate strong academic performance, with higher STAAR proficiency rates in certain subjects. Nyos Lamar Secondary's success can be attributed to its relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 8.9 to 12.2 over the past three years, as well as its strong performance for students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds and those in special education.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Wonderful school. Teachers work hard and find ways to present curriculum in engaging ways for students. There are many hands on learning experiences and opportunities to experience new things from different perspectives and to explore new learning styles. Students are held to high expectations of responsibility and respect in themselves, their learning environment, their peers and their teachers. The TAKS test scores are consistently high, and there is always a large percentage of students who achieve commended scores. Overall, a very solid school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
