Shwab Elementary

Summary:

Shwab Elementary is a public elementary school in Nashville, Tennessee, serving 337 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Davidson County school district, which is ranked 122 out of 139 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Shwab Elementary faces significant academic challenges, consistently ranking in the bottom 10-15% of Tennessee elementary schools over the past several years. The school's performance on state assessments (TNReady) is significantly below the county and state averages across all grades and subjects, particularly for female students, African American students, and English Language Learner (ELL) students. While Shwab Elementary's spending per student is higher than nearby schools, and it has a relatively low student-teacher ratio, these factors do not appear to be translating into improved academic outcomes.

Interestingly, the nearby schools in the Davidson County district also struggle academically, with most of them ranking in the bottom 10-20% of Tennessee elementary schools. This suggests that the challenges faced by Shwab Elementary may be systemic within the district. The high percentage of Hispanic and ELL students at Shwab Elementary, combined with the low socioeconomic status of the student population, may be contributing factors to the school's academic challenges. Addressing these issues will require a comprehensive, data-driven approach to improve educational outcomes for the students at Shwab Elementary.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Dr. Gibbs arrival has been the best thing that has happen to our school. I have three children all of whom attend Schwab. At this point all I can say is that I wish that she had arrived sooner! While her arrival resulted in the departure of a few teachers. It appears that it was for the greater good. Every child is unique and every child is different. She truly understands different teaching techniques which is transparent within the train that she is delivering to her teachers. My children are actually excited about going to school! I am proud to call Shwab my childrens second home! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
