Seven Oaks Elementary

Summary:

Seven Oaks Elementary is a public elementary school in Columbia, South Carolina, serving 520 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Lexington 05 school district, which is ranked 13 out of 75 districts in the state and has a 4-star rating.

Despite the district's strong performance, Seven Oaks Elementary consistently ranks in the bottom half of South Carolina elementary schools, with proficiency rates on state assessments that are 30-50 percentage points below the district and state averages. The school's academic struggles are particularly pronounced for its African American and low-income student populations, which make up the majority of the student body. In contrast, nearby schools like Harbison West Elementary and Nursery Road Elementary in the Lexington 05 district outperform Seven Oaks by 20-30 percentage points on state assessments and have higher statewide rankings.

While Seven Oaks Elementary has a relatively low student-teacher ratio and higher spending per student compared to nearby schools, these factors have not translated into improved academic outcomes. The school's high percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds (100% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch) may be a significant contributing factor to its struggles, suggesting a need for targeted interventions and support to address the disparities and improve student learning.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I am a parent of 2 young children that go to this school. This is school has some GREAT teachers who care for the well being for the children they have in their classroom, but then you got some teachers there that don't. Some teachers have shown disrespect to some of their students by talking down to them and not lifting them up, you are suppose to encourage them not talk down to the students that are in your classroom. I find that very rude on the fact that they have chosen a career to be a GREAT role model to these kids and teach them. When my children first started going to this school I thought it was the best school for my kids to attend for their first years of school. A couple of accidents that has happened to my kids in this school has definitely made me change my mind, it makes me think on how they are really being treated in class when I am not there. There was nothing done to the other kids who have hurt them, they took it as they were young kids and that was it. If you don't have consequences for the kids and their actions when they are young what do they expect when they get older. They will have no grounds to stand on to be responsible students and Great out-comers. This school has really disappointed me on the outcome of how they really are. I just think that if you have certain rules you want the students to go by I think it is best that the teachers and the principals should go by them also, to be great role models for the kids that they are teaching. I just don't see that here at this school. So as all this being said we are currently trying to find another school for my kids to attend because my kids mean the world to me and as their mother I want the best for my kids and as of this school it just isn't it. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
