Blacksburg Middle

Summary:

Blacksburg Middle is a public middle school in Blacksburg, South Carolina, serving 360 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the Cherokee 01 school district, which is ranked 55 out of 75 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Blacksburg Middle consistently outperforms the Cherokee 01 district and the state of South Carolina in standardized test scores, particularly in EOCEP/Algebra 1/Mathematics for the Technologies 2. In 2023-2024, Blacksburg Middle had a 92.72% proficiency rate, compared to 60.62% for the district and 72.5% for the state. However, the school has a predominantly white student population (81.67%), which is significantly higher than the racial diversity of nearby schools like John E. Ewing Middle (59.47% white) and Gaffney Middle (50.6% white). Additionally, Blacksburg Middle has a high percentage of students (72.5%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a relatively low socioeconomic status of the student population.

Despite the high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, Blacksburg Middle has a higher spending per student ($13,231 in 2022-2023) compared to the nearby schools, such as John E. Ewing Middle ($12,493) and Gaffney Middle ($12,831). This suggests that the school may be allocating resources effectively to support the needs of its student population. However, Blacksburg Middle's performance on standardized tests has fluctuated over the years, with a decline in its statewide ranking from 2018-2019 to 2020-2021, which could be an area of concern that warrants further analysis.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote In a county that is 90 rule with no Wi-Fi internet connection or even reliable cell service, they have executed online learning so poorly during the covid-19 pandemic. Even before covid-19 the school was not that good there's very little opportunity in the area school has a poor Athletics program it's really got a poor program for everything no ATC classes are offered there's really nothing for the kids , academically the school is low performing academically, the teachers are bored and tired it seems for the most part. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
