Calhoun Academy of the Arts

Summary:

Calhoun Academy of the Arts is a public elementary school serving 473 students in grades PK-5 in Anderson, South Carolina, which is part of the Anderson 05 school district. While the district is ranked 20 out of 75 in the state with a 4-star rating, Calhoun Academy has seen a decline in its statewide ranking, dropping from a high of 148 out of 630 elementary schools in 2013-2014 to its current ranking of 336 out of 638 schools.

Calhoun Academy performs relatively well for its African American students, ranking 67 out of 369 elementary schools, but struggles with its Gifted and Talented students, ranking 93 out of 109 elementary schools. The school's test scores in English Language Arts and Mathematics are generally below the district and state averages, except for 3rd-grade ELA and Math, where the school outperforms the district and state. Despite a 100% free/reduced lunch rate and a steady increase in per-student spending, from $10,133 in 2019-2020 to $13,385 in 2022-2023, the school's overall performance has not shown a corresponding improvement.

Compared to nearby schools in the Anderson 05 district, such as North Pointe Elementary and Concord Elementary, Calhoun Academy's performance is generally lower, with higher statewide rankings and better test scores. This suggests a need for the school to examine how additional resources are being utilized and to focus on providing appropriate educational opportunities for all students, including its high-achieving Gifted and Talented population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
