New Cumberland Middle School

Summary:

New Cumberland Middle School is a public middle school serving grades 6-8 in the West Shore School District, with a student population of 549 as of the 2022-2023 school year. The school's racial makeup is predominantly White (64.85%), with significant Hispanic (15.66%) and African American (10.02%) populations.

Despite its location, New Cumberland Middle School has consistently underperformed compared to the district and the state of Pennsylvania in PSSA test scores, with only 23.6% of all students proficient or better in PSSA Math in the 2022-2023 school year, compared to 44.8% for the district and 39.3% for the state. The school's statewide ranking has also declined over the years, from 375 out of 891 Pennsylvania middle schools in 2018-2019 to 495 out of 893 in 2022-2023, with a consistent 2-star rating from SchoolDigger. Additionally, the school's performance varies significantly across different student subgroups, with African American and disabled students performing better than their low socioeconomic status and multi-racial peers.

When compared to other middle schools in the West Shore School District, such as Crossroads Middle School and Allen Middle School, New Cumberland Middle School underperforms significantly in terms of PSSA proficiency rates, statewide rankings, and free/reduced lunch rates. The school's high percentage of free/reduced lunch recipients (49.36% in 2022-2023) suggests that it serves a relatively disadvantaged population, which may contribute to its academic challenges. The school's leadership and the district should closely examine these issues and develop targeted strategies to address the root causes, improve academic outcomes, and provide equitable opportunities for all students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My daughter has been to her share of schools and this is her 5th school in 8 years of schooling. She has now been at NCMS for a full year (2 grades, since she came in the middle of the school year last year) and I have been nothing but impressed. My daughter has gone to a private school, a charter school and public schools in PA and in GA. I was immediately wowed because of the schools boating certification program in the 6th grade, where students are taken to the Redland HS and later to the Pinchot park and if they put the effort in, and pass the test, they receive a certification. Very few schools would take on the extra work required to make such seemingly unnecessary programs work, but our school did. The teachers have been great. I had not one but two teachers reach out to me last year, just to say what a pleasure it has been to have my daughter in their class. That takes time and it was completely unnecessary and I appreciate that. I've also had random emails this year from teachers letting us know what large assignments are due. These are just one-liners but do they do the job, and again, I appreciate it because it takes time and that little extra step that a lot of teachers may not bother to do. We've also been fortunate to get a new Principal and Vice Principal and the kids were excited, my daughter said all the other schools in the area wanted them for their principal. Every day they happily greet the kids in the morning outside and help guide traffic in the rain-sleet-snow. Again, I appreciate that! The students that I have had a pleasure to meet have also been great. They're friendly, down to earth and respectful. I know their parents have raised them well. I've heard other negative stories, especially when we first moved here. I can't tell you how many people warned me about NCMS and how many parents that I talked to who feared sending their kids here! No doubt there's room for improvement but I believe that the negative stories you hear are the exceptions and not the rule. Take note to who has written all of the previous reviews, they are mostly just kids. I think a little appreciation and positivity can go a long way in regarding one's school so I decided to share my thoughts. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
