Spring Cove Middle School

Summary:

Spring Cove Middle School is a public middle school located in Roaring Spring, Pennsylvania, serving grades 6-8 with a total enrollment of 376 students. The school is part of the Spring Cove School District, which is ranked 319 out of 606 school districts in Pennsylvania and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

While Spring Cove Middle School has a significantly higher percentage of white students (93.09%) compared to the state average and nearby schools like Altoona Area Junior High School, its academic performance, as measured by PSSA test scores, is generally lower than the state and district averages. For example, in 2022-2023, only 21.5% of students were proficient or better in PSSA Math, compared to the state average of 39.3% and the district average of 38%. This trend is consistent across grade levels and subject areas. Additionally, the school's performance for specific student subgroups, such as white students and low socioeconomic status students, is much lower than the state average.

Despite the steady increase in spending per student at Spring Cove Middle School, from $10,874 in 2018-2019 to $13,214 in 2021-2022, the school's academic performance has remained relatively stagnant. This is in contrast to nearby schools like Bellwood Antis Middle School, Chestnut Ridge Middle School, and Hollidaysburg Area Junior High School, which consistently outperform Spring Cove Middle School on PSSA tests. The school's racial homogeneity and disparities in subgroup performance suggest the need for a more comprehensive approach to school improvement and a focus on addressing the unique needs of the school's diverse student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
