Southern Fulton Junior/Senior High School

Summary:

Southern Fulton Junior/Senior High School is a public high school in Warfordsburg, Pennsylvania, serving grades 7-12 with a total enrollment of 325 students. The school is part of the Southern Fulton School District, which is ranked 332 out of 606 school districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

While Southern Fulton Junior/Senior High School has some strengths, such as consistently high graduation rates ranging from 86.5% to 97.6% in the past five years, it faces challenges in academic performance. The school's test scores, particularly in PSSA Math and English Language Arts, are generally lower than the state averages and the scores of nearby schools like James Buchanan High School and McConnellsburg High School. Additionally, the school has experienced a significant decline in its statewide ranking, dropping from 40th out of 673 Pennsylvania high schools in 2017-2018 to 385th out of 674 in 2022-2023.

Socioeconomic factors may be playing a role in the school's academic performance, as it has a higher percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (39.38% in 2022-2023) compared to the nearby James Buchanan High School (93.47%) and McConnellsburg High School (25.43%). Despite its higher per-student spending ($22,109 in 2021-2022) compared to these nearby schools, Southern Fulton Junior/Senior High School's academic performance suggests that more targeted strategies may be needed to address the unique challenges facing the school and its community.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The nepotism is ridiculous and all the new, younger teachers get run out (bullied) by the existing ones. The funding is not used appropriately as there are necessary renovations that aren't being addressed. It has become impossible for students from large or poor households to participate in co-curricular activities as there is a $50-$100 fee on top of what you will need to buy through the course of the activity. Teachers need to buy their own supplies for their students. They rail the students to go to college after graduation but offer practically no guidance. Teachers are bullying students with no repercussions. They make it impossible for anyone in the community to address anything.
There are a few very good teachers that care a lot about their students and their success. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
