Southwark School

Summary:

Southwark School is an elementary school located in Philadelphia, PA, serving grades PK-8 with a total enrollment of 920 students. The school is part of the Philadelphia City School District, which is ranked 494 out of 606 districts in Pennsylvania and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Southwark School consistently ranks in the bottom quartile of Pennsylvania elementary schools, with significantly below-average performance on PSSA tests across all grade levels and subject areas. The school's academic performance varies greatly among student subgroups, with White students performing relatively better than Hispanic, English Language Learner, and economically disadvantaged students. Southwark School also experiences higher dropout rates compared to the state and district averages.

While Southwark School has a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch and a relatively low student-teacher ratio, these resources have not translated into improved academic outcomes. Nearby schools in the Philadelphia City School District, such as Fanny Jackson Coppin School, Jenks Abram School, and Vare-Washington Elementary School, generally perform better than Southwark School on academic measures, suggesting that the school's challenges may be influenced by factors beyond just resource allocation.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Teachers were awful. Many of them don't teach. (I am not exaggerating. I had one teacher sleep while students played among themselves.) Bullying was a huge problem. Even with teachers who cared, classmates were often disruptive. Fighting was a weekly occurrence. Classes were uninspiring. Southwark ranks near the bottom of the state for a reason. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
