Key Francis Scott School

Summary:

Key Francis Scott School is an elementary school in Philadelphia, PA, serving 376 students from kindergarten to 6th grade as part of the Philadelphia City School District.

While Key Francis Scott School has a unique racial makeup with a significantly higher percentage of Hispanic (55.85%) and Asian (29.26%) students compared to nearby schools, it consistently ranks in the bottom 20% of Pennsylvania elementary schools, with performance on standardized tests well below state and district averages. The school has an extremely high percentage of students (over 99%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage. Despite increased spending per student, from $12,956 in 2018-2019 to $20,507 in 2021-2022, the school's academic performance has not improved.

Interestingly, some nearby schools, such as Fanny Jackson Coppin School and Jenks Abram School, perform significantly better on standardized tests and have higher rankings among Pennsylvania elementary schools. Additionally, Key Francis Scott School ranks relatively high (48 out of 196) for supporting English Language Learner (ELL) students, despite the high percentage of Hispanic students. However, the school's overall performance has remained consistently low over the past 10 years, suggesting systemic challenges that have not been adequately addressed.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This is one of the better neighborhood schools. It is like a hidden treasure. The school offers art, music, and computer classes to all students as well as instrumental music to many. There is gifted support and extracurricular club activities. The school does not have a parent group which is one of its down falls, but there are a few parents who take an active interest and do what they can to make things better. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
